Teaching & Other Details
I cater my teaching approach individually so it might differ from student to student. However, I structure my teaching in a way that fulfills all aspects of music. For beginners, we start with basic music notation reading - notes, rhythms, dynamics and structure. I have a very systematic approach to sound production on the oboe and breathing which can also be transferred and applied to any wind instrument. I use a beginner oboe method to start but like to transition to playing actual pieces instead of exercises as soon as the student learns correct fingerings for the instrument. This normally takes 4 lessons. Most importantly, we discuss phrasing and musicality which are two of the most important things that make music special and that are a must in any performance. I guide my students to figuring out the musical phrases on their own and creating an interpretation they are happy with. Very often, I like to play duets with my students or accompany their solo pieces on the piano for the experience of playing chamber music together. There are many things to learn in group music making! Many students are interested in doing RCM examinations. I follow the RCM syllabus and always very happy to use it to create goals in our studies.
